Innovative Processes and Tools

The McKenney’s team designed and installed mechanical systems for the East Coast headquarters of a multi-national managed care company in Charlotte, North Carolina.

THE CHALLENGE

Unlike many projects of this type, the McKenney’s team was awarded the work after the concrete had already started pouring. The team started the mechanical design immediately, prioritizing and focusing efforts to stay ahead of the demanding schedule. Constant deliveries of mechanical, electrical and plumbing materials—along with managing a large workforce—required careful coordination.

THE SOLUTION

To stay ahead of schedule, the team reviewed the design and layout of mechanical rooms, the chilled water plant, and the condenser water plant with the building owner by using virtual and augmented reality tools. These tools were also used internally with start-up and commissioning. The use of our virtual reality tools streamlined the decision-making process with the owner. It allowed the owner to immerse themselves in the 3D model and get a feel for the space before it was built.

THE RESULTS

The high-profile project is expected to be completed on schedule, significantly growing Centene’s footprint in the region and attracting thousands of new employees.
