Creative Install for Data Center

A major Carolinas cable telecommunications company needed a new 175,000-square-foot data facility project completed in less than a year.

THE CHALLENGE

McKenney’s was responsible for an aggressive project schedule that had a tight completion deadline for the size and scope of the work. The project required management of extensive materials, including sheet metal, plumbing systems, mechanical piping and custom pipe dollies.

THE SOLUTION

Using Building Information Modeling (BIM), McKenney’s prefabricated and staged 80-90 percent of the mechanical piping in advance of installation in order to save time and money. The team custom fabricated pipe dollies to handle two lengths (supply and return) of prefabricated pipe and utilized single pipe dollies to be able to move the prefabricated pipe more easily. A high capacity spider crane was employed to safely and efficiently set the heaviest prefabricated pipes onto the supports.

THE RESULTS

McKenney’s successfully completed the project on schedule and on budget and was hired to work on future expansion projects by the customer.
