Elevating Aviation: Seamless Expansion at the World’s Busiest Airport

At the world’s busiest airport, even a small delay can ripple across the globe. That’s why when Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport set out to expand Concourse D—originally built in the 1980s—they needed a partner who could deliver major upgrades without disrupting 24/7 operations. McKenney’s answered the call with a strategy built around the customer’s main goal: keep passengers moving.

The Challenge
The project demanded a complete overhaul of outdated infrastructure while keeping the concourse fully functional. That meant maintaining continuous operations, ensuring passenger comfort, and avoiding disruptions to flights—all within one of the most complex and fast-moving environments. A particularly intricate task was the renovation of the existing pump room, packed with decades of mechanical systems. The McKenney’s team had to replace everything without interrupting service, requiring precise sequencing and close coordination with airport facilities.

The Solution
The General Contractor and McKenney’s team implemented a five-phase construction strategy, limiting closures to eight gates at a time. Modular building structures were prefabricated offsite and transported across active runways overnight using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). Pre-fabricated chilled water pump skids and shop-fabricated piping reduced fieldwork and accelerated installation within the pump room—minimizing disruption, maximizing efficiency and maintaining the project schedule

The Results
Phase 1 has added 21,000 square feet of boarding space, providing a more comfortable experience for up to 190 passengers. Phase 2 is ahead of schedule and will add another 22,000 square feet by Fall 2025.

  • Upon completion, the new Concourse D will deliver:
  • 75% more boarding-level space
  • Double the restroom and hold room capacity
  • 18-foot ceilings and 50% more concessions
  • Upgraded infrastructure targeting LEED Silver certification

With this expansion, Atlanta strengthens its global leadership in air travel—and McKenney’s highlights its capability to execute large-scale upgrades in the aviation space.
