Efficient HVAC Solutions for Emory: On Budget, On Target

McKenney’s collaborated with May Architecture and DPR Construction to design and implement an HVAC system for Emory University. The system adhered to the owner’s precise budget while integrating cutting-edge technology. This project faced significant challenges, including maintaining operations on a fully occupied floor during construction, limited vertical space for mechanical systems, and the complexities associated with system shutdowns.

THE CHALLENGE
Installing a large, chilled water HVAC system to service this 107,000-square-foot facility consisting of a gym, bowling alley, auditorium, meeting and event center required meticulous planning and coordination. With multiple floor and ceiling elevations, significant duct work distribution was necessary. The team also had to meet very precise system performance and theater quality noise requirements.

THE SOLUTION
The project required the middle floor of a three-story building, which served as a behavioral health unit, to remain operational during the renovation of the top floor. Additionally, the existing structure had limited vertical space, with only 16 inches available to accommodate all mechanical systems, necessitating multiple system shutdowns for new installations.

THE RESULTS
The teams’ solution ensured uninterrupted patient care and comfort during construction, with no disruptions to hospital operations. The project was completed on budget, enabling the hospital to transition to the newly renovated space while maintaining essential services for patients. This outcome demonstrated McKenney’s commitment to patient-focused, efficient project execution.
