HJAIA Concourse D Widening North – Controls

Cleared for Takeoff: ACS’ Aviation Milestone. HJAIA Concourse D Widening North – Controls

McKenney’s Automation & Controls began work in October 2023 on their first project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA), marking a milestone as one of the team’s largest efforts to date. The project, located on the north side of Concourse D, is structured into five phases, with completion expected in 4Q26. It includes the installation of more than 170 terminal units and a suite of advanced mechanical and control systems.

Each phase involved replacing the existing operating system with Niagara BAS system with Distech controls integrated into rooftop units, air handlers, terminal units, exhaust fans, ductless split systems, and VAVs with heating hot water reheat. A critical component of the work required precise integration of the heating hot water pump system to pull water from the Central Utility Plant in the T concourse (TCUP) to serve the north, and eventually the south, end of Concourse D.

To increase efficiency and minimize disruption, McKenney’s prefabricated the large-scale concourse modules off-site. Transporting these massive structures across the active airfield tarmac required detailed logistical planning, escort vehicles, and real-time coordination. Once delivered, the modules were precisely positioned, assembled, and welded in place to form the new Concourse D structure.

The team also executed the installation of a Hyper-V failover cluster server, connected through a high-availability network, to ensure operational redundancy and system reliability.

CHALLENGES:

Working at an active airport presented several logistical and operational constraints. Entering secure zones, mobilizing equipment, and coordinating around live airport operations, Required extensive planning. With customer comfort paramount above all else at an active airport, navigating security protocols while working around other trades and accessing and entering the workspaces was compulsory. The team maintained Meticulous documentation, built in contingency time for disruptions, and scheduled off-hour work shifts to maintain productivity. The result was a flexible, responsive project strategy tailored to a high traffic environment.

SOLUTION:
Collaboration drove the project forward, aligning the efforts of the general contractor, the City of Atlanta, and airport owner representatives. Clearly defined roles and open communication maintained alignment across all parties. In parallel, McKenney’s coached the subcontractors to meet quality and safety standards to ensure consistent execution and long-term partnerships.

THE RESULTS

During construction at Concourse D, the McKenney’s team was also awarded additional work at the T Concourse’s (TCUP) heating hot water plant by a separate general contractor. This pull-through work reflected the team’s performance and reputation on the ground.

This ongoing project demonstrates McKenney’s leadership in complex system integration and control solutions in the aviation market, demonstrating the team’s ability to navigate operational complexity while delivering high-quality, scalable results.delivering high-quality, scalable results.
