Retrocommissioning Heightens Efficiency

McKenney’s monitored, analyzed and repaired existing mechanical systems in the Allen Plaza high-rise tower to improve energy efficiency.

THE CHALLENGE

The McKenney’s Retrocommissioning team conducted extensive system testing and identified 55 areas for improvement as well as eight capital improvement projects. Among them, the team wanted to make adjustments to the central ventilation system and air handling control strategy.

THE SOLUTION

The team customized field efforts to evaluate, fine-tune, and retest systems and document results. Then, it leveraged the information to streamline repairs and added control strategies to reduce energy consumption for the central ventilation system. The team also revised the control strategies for the main air handling systems and tested it to ensure optimal performance.

THE RESULTS

Allen Plaza was certified LEED® Gold for Existing Buildings. Recovery of retrocommissioning investments can be achieved on some projects immediately while others will take one or two years. Additional capital improvement investments could save more than $42,000 annually.
